About the course

Develop practical skills in digital forensics and incident investigation through a series of self-paced, hands-on labs covering the methods, tools, and professional practices used to examine digital evidence.

The course introduces the digital forensics profession, investigative procedures, data acquisition, and crime and incident scene processing, with an emphasis on preserving evidence integrity and following sound forensic practices.

Learners will explore working with Windows, command-line interface (CLI) systems, Linux and Macintosh file systems, and current digital forensics tools.

Practical topics include recovering graphics files, performing forensic analysis and validation, examining virtual machines, conducting live acquisitions and network forensics, and investigating email, social media, mobile devices, and cloud environments.

Additional sections cover report writing for high-tech investigations, presenting expert testimony, and understanding the ethical responsibilities of an expert witness.

The labs provide opportunities to develop an understanding of how digital evidence is collected, preserved, examined, validated, and documented across a range of devices and environments.

Learners will also explore the importance of maintaining evidence integrity, following appropriate investigative procedures, documenting findings clearly, and communicating technical conclusions in a professional and defensible manner.

By completing the labs, learners will gain foundational skills in digital evidence acquisition, file system analysis, data recovery, network and cloud forensics, mobile device investigations, forensic validation, and investigative reporting.

The course provides a practical foundation for further study in computer forensics, cybercrime investigations, incident response, and digital evidence analysis, while reinforcing the importance of ethical conduct and professional standards throughout the investigative process.
